Livanda's Sleep School (Sweden)

- Description:
Livanda's Sleep School is a program for those who suffer from insomnia. The program is based on principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and is designed to help manage problems such as difficulty falling asleep, waking up early, and waking up during the night. Sleep School is organised into eight modules that you can work through at your own pace, though it is recommended that you work on each section for about a week. Each module consists of a facts section and a group of tasks, containing the following elements:
• Information about sleep and sleep disorders, and task-related information.
• Information that has been shown to affect sleep in a positive way.
• Sleep diary and sleep profile which give you an idea of how your sleep problems change over time.
Online support from a psychologist is available (at an extra cost). Access to the program is available for 12 weeks from the date you register, but this can be extended if required.- Service URL:

- Outcome Summary:
One study has investigated the efficacy of the Sleep School program. Participants who met criteria for insomnia were randomly assigned to either a cognitive-behavioural self-help treatment or a waiting list control condition. Both groups completed a sleep diary for a period of 2 weeks and filled in a Dysfunctional Beliefs and Attitudes about Sleep (DBAS) Scale. The DBAS is a 28-item scale measuring sleep-related cognitions. The sleep diary and DBAS could be deemed active components, so this trial is not considered an RCT for the purposes of the Beacon evaluation. The 5-week intervention consisted of sleep restriction, stimulus control, information about sleep hygiene, cognitive restructuring, and information about medication withdrawal. Results showed statistically significant improvements in the treatment group on many outcome measures, including total sleep time, total wake time in bed, and sleep efficiency. However, improvements were also found in the control group. Overall, between-groups effect sizes were low, with the exception of the Beliefs and Attitudes About Sleep Scale (Cohen's d =.81). The results provide limited evidence that the Sleep School program might be effective.
