Outcome Summary:

The original version of the training course specifically targeted at coaches (one element of Brain 101) was tested in a randomised controlled trial. Youth sport coaches were randomly assigned to either the intervention condition or an attention-control condition and received access to online materials on bicycle and pedestrian safety. Coaches in the intervention group showed significantly greater gains compared to the control group in relation to general knowledge about concussion, knowledge about concussion symptoms, knowledge about concussion misperceptions, self-efficacy regarding perceived self-confidence about taking appropriate action in different scenarios and intentions to take action in different scenarios. Indeed, the effects sizes were all medium to large. Thus, there is evidence in support of the effectiveness of at least one, key element of the Brain 101 targeted at coaches. However, further controlled studies are needed to determine the impact of the school-wide intervention on the different target groups in order to improve the rating of the site as a whole (and published results from such a trial are expected in the near future).
