Digital Alcohol Risk Alertness Notifying Network for Adolescents and Young Adults (D-ARIANNA)

Description:

This app provides users with an evidence-based current risk estimate for binge drinking. The questionnaire at its core consists of 16 questions, ranging from gender and age, to previous use of alcohol, and a brief measure of impulsivity. Upon completion of this questionnaire, users receive personalised feedback regarding the level of risk associated with their drinking, ranging from low risk through to high risk. This information is provided to inform decision-making for young people regarding their drinking, but the app does not provide concrete advice on how to change behaviour.

Outcome Summary:

A single quasi-experimental study has been conducted on D-Arianna. This study, involving 590 young people (18-24 years old) indicated an immediate post-intervention reduction in binge drinking from 37% to 18%. Given the lack of any randomised controlled trials, this should be viewed as weak support for this app's effectiveness, and more conclusive studies (i.e. Randomised controlled trials) are needed.

Carrà et al 2015 describes the development of the app and questionnaire.
